Have you ever seen an “antique coffee table”? You know the ones with marble tops? Some are even called “Victorian”. While they may be a Victorian style table, if they are low they are usually a cut down table. Coffee tables did not exist in the eighteenth or nineteenth century. Tea was served by the hostess from a tall table in front of a tall-backed chair or sofa. Coffee tables we know today did not come into existence until the 1920’s. These tables were often referred to as “cocktail tables” as they were used as places for cocktail glasses, coffee cups or the “coffee-table” book!
